How Does Birth Control Make You Put On Weight?

Is it the medication itself that just automatically makes you put on weight? OR does it just increase your appetite, which makes you gain weight? Can you be on diet pill (ALLI) while on birthcontrol?

I haven’t gained any weight on it. I think it is probably just water weight if it does make you gain any. You shouldn’t take diet pills period.

Birth control pills dont make you put on weight…calories do. I believe the pill makes the body retain more fluid, & might increase appetite, but it all comes down to what you eat & what you do exercise wise.

It can be from body metabolism changes due to the hormones or from increased appetite. A low dose estrogen pill is your best bet. I am on Yasmin & have not gained from it. You can take alli with any pill, as it does not enter your bloodstream.

All birth control contains hormones, just some will make u gain weight, help ur acne/make it worse, or increase ur breast size, or even expand ur hips. Then again, evey1 is different.
Im not a sponser, but may i suggest Yaz? It prevents craving of foods. Even when ur on ur period, u won’t crave that entire box of cheez itz. Though, every body is different, but i’ve yet to even come across some1 who has gained weight. Me, personally, i’ve gained 2 pounds, cuz my breast have grown, & my hips expanded, which then again, its natural, not fattening. With every1 i know using Yaz, they’ve gotten bigger breast, acne has cleared up, & didn’t become tired, or bloated (which makes u feel fat).
Don’t take a diet pill, it will be unneeded with birth control. Most birth control does the same thing neway, it’s just that u’ll be getting more hormones to balance ur self. Ur body will be under control, & ur not gonna gain nething ‘fat’, maybe just in ur breast at the most. In the end, it will most likely work out with u. Just stick to exercising if u feel u want to lose weight.

yes you can take a diet pill while on birth control
id have to say about 2 out of every ten people i see that are taking birth control say that it has caused unwanted weight. the rest are unaffected but that part. it can also cause mood swings. best advice is to try it out. you can always stop taking it if you dont like it. hope that helps

I took alli while I was on birth control (still am). I don’t exactly know why birth control makes you gain, I don’t think it’s appetite increase because I have been eating no differently since last year (I started taking birth control Jan of this year & I’ve gained 30 pounds). – I don’t eat fast food much, but I don’t eat salads all day either. I have a pretty average diet. So, my guess is something in the medication. All I know is, I’m getting off this month because I can’t believe how much weight I’ve gained!!

    Laura says:

The only things you should avoid on birth control are:
    -Antibiotic’s
-St. John’s Wort (mood enhancing vitamin)
    -Excessive drinking
-Missing a pill/taking birth control incorrectly
All these are many of the reasons women claim to get pregnant on birth control.
The reason birth control will make you gain weight is because the hormones in it slow down your metabolism. It doesn’t make everyone gain, some people more some less but you will be able to tell if your gaining weight or not because you will notice a huge increase in your appetite.
On nuvaring I gained a few lbs nothing too bad, some people on the depo shot ive heard gained almost 50lbs, some on the pill gained, my mom was on the patch & gained but for many people it doesn’t effect them at all.
Just try one out & if its making you gain or have nasty side effects just tell your doctor & they’ll be happy to switch you to something else.

Birth control (also known as contraception) is a method used to prevent pregnancy. There are a variety of birth control methods for women including hormonal birth control (pills, shots, the patch), vaginal ring, the implant & intrauterine devices (IUDs). Not only can birth control protect you from getting pregnant, but many women use birth control to minimize the pain & discomfort associated with menstruation, fibroid tumors & ovarian cysts. Although many birth control methods are very effective, some women complain about the weight gain they experience from using certain birth control methods. Luckily, there are a few things that you can do to control weight gain from birth control.
Choose birth control with a lower estrogen level such as Ortho Tri-****, Triphasil, Yasmin, Levlite, LoEstrin & Alesse. Research shows that high doses of estrogen can result in fluid retention & weight gain.
Step3Follow a well-balanced diet. Be sure to eat three healthy meals a day (breakfast, lunch & dinner), eat plenty of fruits & vegetables & reduce your sodium (salt) intake. Avoid eating foods that are high in sugar & carbohydrates (such as candy, french fries, soda, ice cream & potato chips) & choose foods that are less fattening.
Step4Exercise 4 to 5 times a week. You need some form of physical activity in order to stay healthy & fit. Some effective exercising methods include walking, jogging, swimming, aerobics, biking, tennis & kick boxing.
Step5Drink plenty of water every day. You should drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. Water helps to flush out your system & it also reduces weight gain.
Step6Take fluid pills to reduce water retention in your body.

    ahdriann says:

It increases your appetite, it doesn’t make you put on weight automatically. So if you just keep eating the same amount as usual, you shouldn’t really put on weight. With me, I was constantly hungry for a week or two when I first started the pill, nomatter what I ate! It’s just your body getting used to the homone changes.
The extra hunger (as well as any other side effects you might experience) should go away within a few weeks of using the pill

you can do anything you would normally do while on birth control. i think people put on weight because birth control changes your hormones. everyone reacts to it differently, & different types do different things. my mom was on the depo shot & she lost weight, wheras my friend gained it on the same thing. it probly has a lot to do with your metabolism & activity level.
