That sounds like you messed the ligaments up in it a little bit. The best way I know of explaining it is that there are 4 major ligaments in the back of your knee. When they are in sync with each other they work fine, when out of sync with each other they are painful. I often have to use this one myself after having had knee trouble years ago. I can come up limping & remain that way until I get do this release which kind of puts them back together in sync. Here is how to do that:
Knees:
While sitting place both hands around your leg just behind the knee & with your fingers find the 4 big ligaments that are there, two for the inside hand & two for the outside hand, one on the inside & one about an inch up on the outside of your leg. Press into all 4 of them at the same time & hold the pressure there. Relax. Wait 30 seconds. Then slowly side your leg out to a full extension, release the pressure but rest your leg there for another 30 seconds.
Feel around to find all four of them & once you have them it will be easy.

You may have pulled or twisted something out of place when you tripped. I’d get it checked to be sure of the best way to remedy this. Have someone take you to the clinic or doctor to have it examined. I would not try to move around on this without any support, crutches, until it mends more.
